Mainly letters written to Shinn as editor of the Overland Monthly, concerning her work, the magazine's poor financial condition, and articles and stories submitted by writers; together with several letters to her dealing with Lick Observatory (about which she wrote a piece of investigative journalism), the University of California and its president, Benjamin Ide Wheeler, the death of Edward Rowland Sill, and her involvement in the field of child development. Correspondents include Ina D. Coolbrith, Martha Hallidie, Edward S. Holden, Helen Hunt Jackson, David Starr Jordan, Ernest C. Peixotto, Josiah Royce, Katherine Royce, and Samuel H. Willey. Also includes a small amount of personal papers of Shinn's cousin, Edmund Clark Sanford, and his family.
